Owning your swing

Deconstructing Bryson

October 12, 2020 by Stephen Altschuler 4 Comments

Many have focused on Bryson DeChambeau’s added bulk and strength and how that is the reason for his added voluminous distance. But I submit the reasons BD has increased his distance goes much further than that.

Bryson and the Fate of the Game

September 28, 2020 by Stephen Altschuler 4 Comments

Not since the need to Tiger-proof Augusta National have we seen anything quite like it. Bryson DeChambeau, or Chambo as he is beginning to be called, has the golf world on tenterhooks. Is this the next step–and a giant step it is–after the amazing Tiger? Bryson hits drives 360+, at will,

Fixing Jordan Spieth

September 21, 2020 by Stephen Altschuler 2 Comments

In trying to help Jordan Spieth fix his game, former World Number One and now Golf Channel commentator David Duval came up with what he calls “reactionary golf.” In my thinking, it’s quite wise, and may have two, or possibly even more, meanings.

Goldilocks Golf: Not Too Fast, Nor Too Slow, But Just Right

August 24, 2020 by Stephen Altschuler 2 Comments

With Buddhist practice, we aim for the Middle Way–something between the extremes the Buddha discovered by trial and error. The golf swing should be approached in like fashion.

Key Ways to Learn from Matt Wolff

July 27, 2020 by Stephen Altschuler Leave a Comment

The local pro at the range I frequent I understand is one of the best in the area; but his rates are a bit rich for my blood. So I decided, as I often do, to noodle around a bit with the mechanics of my swing and see if I could solve a couple conundrums. […]

The Art of Holding Off at Impact

June 7, 2020 by Stephen Altschuler 3 Comments

One of my teachers, Jim Knego, the eminent pro at Bennett Valley in Santa Rosa CA, took a look at my swing once and noticed I was pulling everything left.  His prescription was to hold off the club face at impact. And once I got the hang of it, it worked. Of course, in the […]

A Simple, Effective Swing

June 2, 2020 by Stephen Altschuler 12 Comments

A simple swing? But with all the moving parts involved, how could a golf swing be simple? How about the precise sequence of movements? How about the perfect timing required? How about E=mc squared? How about the centrifugal forces of physics involved? After all, didn’t physics major Bryson DeChambeau win seven times factoring in all […]

Back to Live Golf!

May 18, 2020 by Stephen Altschuler 4 Comments

It was a good, skins game, back-to-live golf match up. The underdogs, Rickie Fowler and Matt Wolff, almost pulled off an upset, on a very interesting golf course, the Donald Ross-design Seminole Golf Club in Florida. The winners, World Number one Rory McIlroy and his partner Dustin Johnson, squeaked out a win at the end. […]

Learning from the Greats

May 4, 2020 by Stephen Altschuler 3 Comments

Watching last year’s Insperity Greats of Golf this year, I was struck with how accurate these remarkable players still are. I was most impressed with Nicklaus, Player, Trevino, and Sorenstam. All made solid and consistent clubhead contact at impact, leading to tee shots that were in play and relatively long. Player, at 83, was particularly […]
